2003 Minutes
Team Rep Meeting Minutes February 10, 2003
Chair report
Introduction of the Executive – New Treasurer – Cynthia from the Bat Grrls.
Summary of decisions made at the AGM distributed. Our goal on the executive is to please as many as possible – re: the pod structures and the scheduling as well as the interplay between the pods. Team reps are to communicate to their teams after each meeting, please ensure this is done!!! Especially dog owner issues, no whining or barking dogs, and please carry bags to clean up after them if you do bring your dog, thank you. As soon as the fields are secured and all teams have registered, we can produce a schedule. The limit for teams this year is 21. Deadlines are going to be strictly enforced this year. Team fees to be increased by $50.00 per team this year; this is the first increase in league fees in some time. These fees help to cover the cost of fields and professional umpires and we did not make as much money in fundraising as we had hoped last year.
It was brought up at the AGM to lower the age to 16 for the Mabel League, this motion was defeated and we as an executive will provide legal information to discuss at the next AGM.
Discussion to be held for how the point system works for Most Sportly Team.
Registration Process
The executive has decided that we are going to cap the registration at 21 teams and the deadline is March 3, 8pm. $100 deposit required to secure a spot and you can deliver the cheques to Jane’s house or to Ann’s house on the evening of March 3.
Umpire Clinic
April 12 – Noon to 3 at Britannia Field. If you have attended an umpire’s clinic in the last 2 years, you do not need to attend to base ump this year. If you wish to sign up for games, it will be done at this time so you must attend to sign up at least.
Any complaints about carded umpires must be in writing in order to be addressed. Please forward any complaints to the Umpire in Chief – Taylor Stutchbury. It should be difficult to get rid of an umpire, but not entirely impossible, all issues in writing will be addressed.
Thank you to all who volunteered their time last year as base umps, almost every game was covered.
To plate ump in this league you must be carded, to get carded you must attend an Vancouver Softball Umpire’s Association clinic, please contact Pat or Sandy Dooley at 604 325 2849.
Communications report
Caryl sent out an email asking all to reply, and only 5 responses were received. If an email is sent to the team rep requesting reply, please do so by hitting reply, entering your team name in the subject field and hitting send.
Caryl is looking for an assistant webmaster, if you or anyone you know in the league is interested, please contact Caryl at mabelleague@shaw.ca or webmistras@mabelleague.com.
Fields
We should have all the field information within a week or 2, and then we can make the schedule, we will keep you posted.
Treasurer’s report
See attached sheet. Question posed: what do we pay per player to Softball BC, would it be cheaper somewhere else? Answer: We would not be able to play with Van fields or hire umps if we weren’t part of Softball BC, we could get insurance elsewhere, but it is best to be covered under Softball BC. Issue on fees raised, why? We have $5000 in the bank and we are a non-profit organization. The money in the bank is in a conservative GIC and that is a safety measure in case of emergency, i.e. legal fees, etc. Last year we lost money and we would like to break even every year so we raised the fees nominally to help cover costs.
Other business report
This year we will be accepting cheques only, no cash! This will help manage team accountability as well.
L’il tournament is the fundraiser for the Mabel League only, but the tournament is open to all, including Wessa, note that it is a women’s fast pitch tournament and will stay that way.
Question – can teams advertise outside of the league’s ads for new players? No, the league has ads in Extra West and players are contacting Caryl via the website. Please see Caryl if you are looking for specific players.
Long weekend games – no Fridays. For the schedule as well, no Folk Fest, no Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or long weekends.
Standings report
Small change, OTLB is 3rd, Renegades 4th, Eastside Story 5th. If you believe your standings no longer represent your team, you may appeal in writing to the statistician by March 3.
Point System for Most Sportly Team
As per sheet handed out, the team that has the most points at the end of the season wins Most Sportly Team and then do not pay league fees the following year. The Ratz won last year. Please review the sheet with your team and discuss any volunteering you would like to do. For the Meltdown and the Year End Event the Wise Hall is already booked. Thank you to all who helped out last year.
Fundraising and Sponsorship
We are encouraging teams to find ways to fundraise for themselves and the league. One idea is to have a Women’s night at the steam baths. F212 owner might allow us to host an event there for the league. If there is interest, we would need confirmation of that so we know that it would be a money making event, this would also be open to the community of women. Please talk to your teams and get back to us. If anyone has any other ideas (legal!) to help raise money for the league, please let us know.
One idea, banners on the website and at games for those interested in sponsoring the league. We could put apparel on the website – if someone wants to help with organizing that – please step up.
Other idea – raffle off tickets for Canada Cup?

Team Rep Meeting Minutes – March 10, 2003 Chair’s Report As team reps, please communicate everything to your team, either at practice, games or by phone. Please emphasize that the idea of this league is to have fun; treat others with respect and treat them nicely, please don’t mouth off to the umpires, and try to resolve any conflicts that arise. Please treat the executive with respect as we volunteer our time; if there are any issues to deal with, please do so at the team rep meetings, do not call us at home at all hours, and do not call every single member of the executive trying to resolve the same issue, if there is an issue that cannot wait until the next team rep meeting, please call one executive member, preferably the one that the issue revolves around, i.e. – please call Taylor for any issues to do with umpping. If there are any concerns as to whom you should contact, please email (preferable) Ann as the chair and she will delegate the issue to the correct person. If you must call, please do so only once. Registrars Report We have 19 teams in the league with 2 new teams joining this year. Final fees are due by June 2, 2003 and the total is $350.00. If you need Softball BC membership forms, please see Jane. The Renegades and the Sunshine Coasters are not returning this year. The new teams are The Ravens and Something Naked. Registration is closed for the year and all rosters need to be finalized by the L’il tournament. Umpiring Ump and coaches clinic meeting on April 12 from noon till 3 at Britannia. Be prepared that there will be at least 9 games to cover per team. Game signup will also be at this time. If you have attended an ump clinic in the last 2 years, you do not need to attend this year, but please show up to sign up for games. The games must be covered, you cannot pay them out, if you choose to hire a plate ump in the league and pay them to cover your games, that is your choice, but it is your responsibility to cover the games your team is responsible for. The sign up sheet will be at the following team rep meeting on the 14th if you cannot make the clinic on the 12th, but be prepared that most of the games will be chosen by then. Communications There are currently 19 women who want to join our league, Caryl has a list to hand out. If your team is looking for players, please contact Caryl and call the entire list to ensure that you find a good fit for your team. When emails are sent out that ask for a response, please RSVP as soon as possible with your team name as the subject. Sometimes it is very important that we know that teams are getting their emails and some of the information is time sensitive, so again, please RSVP as soon as you can. Fields We have a new executive member taking over the fields as Leah had to step down – Emah from Something Naked, thank you Emah. Ann has been following up the fields situation and this year we have Templeton back. The only thing we don’t have in writing for the fields this year is the finals. Field info will be posted on the website. You can practice on any fields that we have a license for on posted days and you will still be covered by Softball BC insurance if you choose to practice on fields elsewhere. We really can’t do anything about field maintenance and there are still no washrooms at Burnaby Park. Team Standings See handout. 1 – 6 are advanced, 7 – 12 are intermediate, and 13 – 19 are recreational. If you want to appeal where your standings are, please do so in writing by March 20th to Ann (email) Finalized team standings will be posted on the web and brought to the next team rep meeting. Volunteers for League business Meltdown event – Pop Tarts L'il tournament Field lining – Jets Concession – 1st come 1st serve Toilet paper – Line Drivers Garbage – Bat Grrls L'il event – Phoenix Rising Finals Field lining – Rainbow Rockers Toilet paper – Blue Gaze Garbage – Something Naked Chocolates – Pop Tarts Pride Float – Something Naked All Star 50/50 – Wombats Year End Event – Wombats Schedule The schedule will be emailed by March 25th. There is nothing scheduled on Fridays of Long weekends or on long weekends, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Folk Fest or the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. Each team will play 18 games and they will be distributed as equally as possible between weekdays and weekends and fields. You have until April 6th to point out any discrepancies. The play will be as follows: teams 7 – 12 will split with 7, 8 and 9 playing up and 10, 11 and 12 playing down. Each pod will play each other twice and up or down once. You cannot move up or down more than one pod per season. Final standings will be emailed as soon as they are complete. Fundraising and Sponsorship League sponsors can have banners on Pride float, the website, in Xtra West and at tournaments. Sponsor money can go to help keeping league fees down. F212 Steam bath fundraising – no-one opposed. Team sponsorship – sponsors can have banners on the website and at games. Insurance Claims Every team should have a workable first aid kit and an accident report sheet that gets taken to the hospital. You have 90 days to submit receipts for reimbursement. You have 30 days to submit the accident form to Jane. If you are a team who doesn’t get your receipts, please contact Jane and she will help – her # is 604 872 7690. Please ensure that you sign the team rep sign up sheet at every team rep meeting. Other Business Sandra Nerrator wants to set up softball clinics for teams, please contact her directly at 604 272 4889. The fee is $100 per team for approximately 1 – 2 hours of instruction. WESA wants to do a July 1st Celebration and wants to play the Mabel League , suggested that we play both this game and the Pride game. Question – Is the L'il format the same or different this year? It is different as we are doing a round robin this year, this ensures that all teams are guaranteed an equal # of games, please no pick-up’s – different set up – meaning no ringers. Once your roster for the L’il is submitted, that is it.

Team Rep Meeting Minutes – April 14, 2003 Chair’s Report CJ Chairs as Ann not in attendance. Note to all teams that this is a recreational ball league, please be nice to all! Only coaches are to talk to the umpires and remember that base umpires are volunteers. All teams are required to have a functional first aid kit, remember that we have a no blood rule and please carry at least one chemical ice pack. Due to safety concerns, double walled bats will not be allowed, if you have any questions, the bat will say "Double Walled" on it. Standings No concerns were raised so standings are as is. Schedule The 1st team listed is the home team. No concerns raised, good job to the scheduling committee. We are currently waiting to hear from the parks board regarding Templeton as we are trying to change the 6:30 pm games to 1:30 pm, if that is not possible then all Saturday Templeton games will switch to Britannia. An email will be sent to all team reps regarding this issue. Rain Out Procedure Games will be cancelled for rain outs only! Phone the rain out line after 4pm on any given day and it will be posted there if the game is cancelled due to rain or not. If there is no message regarding your game being cancelled, you must show up to the field or you forfeit and that counts as a loss. The umpire may call a rain out at the field. The rained out game will be rescheduled within one week and played within two. For base umps, the team will be contacted regarding the rescheduling, and if no team member can make the rescheduled game, there will be no penalty, other teams will be contacted to see if they can cover. Taylor is the rescheduler and her # is 604 669 0592 for any questions. Umpire Clinic The following teams have not signed up for the full quota of 9 games for their team – Rainbow Rockers need to sign up for 9 games, Line Drivers for 6, Womyn Warriors for 3, Davie Grinders for 1, Eastside Story for 5 and Dreamers for 1. The OTLB and the Ratz both had 10 players attend the clinic. Remember your team is responsible for 9 games per season! We all like to have 2 umpires at our games, so if you don’t show up for a game, your team will be fined $50. Communications Please send confirmation that you have received your email from Caryl! The website has been updated and there are magnets for your fridge or your friends or what have you. If you want your team info on the website, please send to Caryl and she will have it posted there. The Poptarts are doing the Meltdown this year, please take some flyers for your team. Every year we try to get teams to participate in doing a skit, please talk to your team about it for this year. There will be a 50/50 draw and a raffle, and if you are going to do a skit, talk to one of the Pop Tarts when you get to the Meltdown for set up. The event is at the Wise Hall. If you need a list of women that are available to play, please contact Caryl and she will email it to you. Sponsorships, businesses or anything else you would like linked up on the website, email Caryl. L'il There will be 20 places available for the L'IL this year and 3 spots are taken, 17 remain and it is on a first come, first serve basis. The games will be played in a round robin style, each team will have a minimum of 4 games. This is to be a fun tournament, please no uniforms if possible and costumes are welcome! The cost is $240 per team and this includes 2 new game balls. There will be a prize for best team costume. You can register by filling out the form and giving it to Caryl, the due date is May 12th, if your team doesn’t make it in, see if other teams will pick up players so you can participate. Most of the volunteer positions have been filled, only 2 left, the 50/50 and the raffle. (draw for 50/50) Ratz won, (draw for raffle) Bat Grrls won. Score Reporting Guidelines These are posted on the schedule, and if you play the Sophie's Bitches you must still call and report the score. New Business No Treasurer’s report this meeting, there will be one available for next month. Team rosters are due after the L'IL at the first executive meeting, remember only 17 players per team! Any extras go on a ghost roster. Registrar Booklet handed out with registration forms, Softball BC forms to be filled out ASAP before your first game. The reason for the 17 player roster is if any team wishes to go to the Provincials, you can’t carry more than 17. Meeting adjourned in 28 minutes. |

Team Rep Meeting Minutes May 12, 2003 Chair Report Thank you to Pop Tarts for organizing the Meltdown and to all who participated. Constitutional Revision Committee – Shelly to chair, Barb and Jeannette from Sophie’s Bitches volunteered to help clean up. Checklist for managing the League – There are so many things to be done for the league and we want to create a checklist of things that need to be done and when so if someone on the executive gets hurt or cannot do it then the league doesn’t come to a complete halt. As well we are going to create a checklist on how to start up and manage a new team. July 1 – WESA would like the Mabel League to come and play ball – please put forward one team member to play – will be mixed slow and fast pitch at Brockton Oval. Communications Report If you have something to talk to the executive about then please direct your email to the correct member of the executive or directly to Ann, she will then forward to the correct person. The Meltdown was a great financial success, the league made about $1200 – thank you to all the teams that participated in the skits. L’il tournament registration is closed with only 20 spots available, there are a couple of teams that didn’t make it, we would need about 4 more teams to have another even pod and we only have 2, and there isn’t enough interest to have 24 teams. The other issue is fields, if there is any rain then rescheduling would be a disaster. On Thursday May 22 at 7pm at Zesty Café we will do the draw to say where you are playing in the L’il and you will get your package along with the game balls, the team that is lining the fields can pick up the field liners at this time. If you are donating your bases, please bring them at this time. Question raised – are the 2 teams that didn’t get in ok with that? The Womyn Warriors are but the Rainbow Rockers are disappointed. If anyone wants to pick up players then the RR would like to play on other teams. We have higher demand for the L’il than ever but in order to run the tournament we need to cap it at 20 and as this is not a Mabel League event it is open to all on a first come first serve basis. Has anyone looked into Softball City in Surrey? No, it is in Surrey and the cost would be exorbitant. Transit is also an issue, we can talk about where the Mabel League is going at the next AGM, we are an East End community league, do we want to expand? We can’t solve that this year but come to the AGM and help decide this. Pop Tarts are organizing the chocolates, will be delivered this week, each team gets 9 boxes @ $3 per bar. Chocolates are a way to fundraise, the league makes a ton of money. If you haven’t picked them up yet, they will be available for pickup at the meeting May 22. Treasurer’s Report See sheet – Thank you Cynthia Statistician’s Report You can email you score to Lisa if you want at statskeeper03@hotmail.com
UIC Report Please be on time for your games, teams that miss their games pay $50. Registrar Report Please sign in on the sign in sheet for each meeting. If you need Softball BC forms – see Jane. League roster needs to be in by June 2. Bring to Ann’s house at 1177 Keefer St at 7:30 pm – 604 255 8540. Jane will have ghost list ready and team rep can sign for those players. Apparel Report – Emah Apparel ordered – Hoodies in black, grey and blue. Long sleeved shirts in white and black. Girly shirts in baby blue/white and pink/black. Same logo as last year and a good selection of sizes. Cash only for apparel at the L’il. Other Business Norquay field was complained about and it has been mowed. Brit was complained about re: film crews, that has been taken care of as well. New Business – none Adjourned. |

Team Rep Meeting Minutes June 9, 2003 Chair Report Rain out procedure – Sometimes games get called at the field and sometimes they get called beforehand and then it turns out to be nice. Ann did a survey and WESA calls all their games at the field and everyone must show up rain or shine, other leagues do what we do and call it early if the weather sucks. We do the best we can and try to save money on the umpires and to do so we must call the game 2 ½ hours early. We want teams to have as many games as possible and not pay too much extra on the umpires. If the fields aren’t safe that is the umps decision to make and we try to err on the side of playing. July 1st WESA softball invite – Would the Mabel League team like to play just the women of WESA? All agree, please forward one name to Ann, emailed by Friday ok. L’il Debriefing Success financially and overall. Thank you to the Ravens for feeding us all and the Jets for lining the fields, Bat Grrls for the garbage detail & the raffle, Phoenix for doing the dance, Line Drivers for TP duty, Something Naked and Dreamers for excellent costumes. There were some issues re: timing on games, field rules etc to be looked at for next year. As well as having the final played alone and not have a semi final game going on at the same time. Next year going back to the 2 tier system so all teams have a chance. Phantom Flyers from Victoria won the overall tournament. We can have a round robin in 2 divisions, everyone seemed to like knowing when they were playing and being guaranteed 4 games. Didn’t like the pool pick and the field rules on the centre diamond. Everybody had a lot of fun and Phoenix raised almost $500 for the league. A special thank you to Caryl who ran the tournament. Registrar’s Report Only one team roster missing – handed in tonight, everything else going well and we have 1 full ghost roster with 17 names. Umpiring Report Thank you to all the base umps, only 2 games this year so far that haven’t had base umps. If you can’t make a rain out game please try to find someone else that can, if not, call Taylor. Question to not have the base ump clinic on a Saturday next year? Not really viable as that is usually the best day for it. Then could we have the option of 2 dates? Suggestion to the executive for next year. Comment that the base umps are much better this year. Some didn’t feel that the clinic was informative enough. Are recommendations handed over to the new executive? Should be done in point form on a separate sheet to hand over. Apparel Report Went over really well, purchase price was $1572 and sales at the L’il were $1475 only $100 shy of breaking even. Clothing line will be sold at WESA game and final tournament. You can call Emah to purchase in between tournaments and games. We are sold out of some small sizes even though we ordered more smalls and mediums than the year before. Communications Report Chocolates – 9 boxes per team. If your chocolates are white it is because they got hot, they are ok to eat but if you can’t sell them then chuck them out for a refund. If you aren’t comfortable with the label take it off, if you aren’t out or whatever. $675 per team in chq form made payable to Mabel League only! No cash and its due by the next team rep meeting in July. Has anyone thought any more about different fundraising ideas? Chocolates are the easiest and most profitable way for the league to make money. How about Pull Tabs? The executive are all volunteers and if someone else wants to take this on then go for it – if you think you can do something new and make money for the league we would love to hear about it. We make about $6000 profit on the chocolates which saves each team about $350 in league fees and we wouldn’t be able to do half the things we do. Recommendation – someone start a fundraising committee for next year. We need to make money for the league and chocolates are a sure thing. Final Tournament Scheduling Round robin seems to work, Advanced and Intermediate will play 5 games each as there are an even number of teams. Novice is a bit tricky as its uneven in that division, either they play 6 games each and we hire extra fields and it takes longer as we would have to find other fields and get transportation or the novice division only plays 5 games each like the other divisions – this will be decided at the July team rep meeting. We have 4 extra fields for Friday night so that we can get all the scheduled games in except one rec game. There are the final standings to consider as well as some teams may move up or down (not more than one pod though). In order to get all the games in one rec team needs to play 6 games. We have the following fields for Friday night: Clark Park, Woodland Park x 2 and Trout Lake Central in addition to our regular parks. Saturday and Sunday games to be played at Gordon Park. Pods will stay 6, 6 and 7 in rec. 3rd option is to have some Thursday night games for the rec league. Intermediate and recreation finals played at the same time and the Advanced finals played last. Miscellaneous East Side story found helmets – who do they belong to? Wombats doing collage for final dance – send pictures. Minutes to be posted on the website from now on. Templeton and Brit have a batters pit – bring a shovel and fill it yourself, some of the pitching mounds are deep pits as well, we can’t do anything about it but try to fix it ourselves at each game. Hand in team member name for the July 1st WESA game if you have it. |

Team Rep Meeting Minutes July 14, 2003 Please make sure as the rep for your team that this information gets passed on. Finals Earth League donated the 4th diamond for part of the weekend to us for free so please remember that they are doing us a huge favor and leave that diamond spotless. There is a preliminary schedule which will be ready next Monday at the info swap session. Round robin being done by all but the question was would we need to shuttle to other diamonds and have games on Thursday or else would we have to modify the tournament, rec is the only division that is affected as there are an uneven number of teams. Motion to have rec division play modified round robin and have only 5 games, Something Naked moves, Line Drivers second, 13 in favor, 2 against, 1 abstention, motion carries. Standings will be done for next Monday, where you started in the league is where you will play in the finals, and then the finals results are added to the results for the year and that will determine where you start next year. If you didn’t report a win, then you don’t get those points, it affects your standings but not by much. This year in the finals, the winning team will always get last bats unless you are ahead by a run difference of 15, then no last bats. If your team is playing and the umpire tries to stop the game, please kindly remind the ump of this tournament rule. Food at the tournament – Jane has a contact that will come to the field and supply food – donairs, burgers, smokies, fries and drinks, etc. They provide both meat and vegetarian at a reasonable cost. Scorebook meeting at Ann’s house next Monday at 7 pm, all players must have played 5 games and not just have been on the sub list. If one player was injured during the year and didn’t play, you can provide a Dr’s note. Please have the list of all eligible players and please attend the meeting to get standings, schedule etc. Volunteers for the final tournament – Somethin Naked – Garbage Rainbow Rockers – Bases Donated by Dreamers, Rough Diamonds & Phoenix Rising Blue Gaze – Toilet paper East Side Story – 50/50 Ratz – Raffle You must have settled your finances with the league before the finals or your team cannot play. Clothing will be for sale at the finals Weather – you play unless hazardous to your health, assume you are playing as there are no rain outs for the finals!! Show up rain or shine!! Chocolate Money Must be in tonight, if not paid tonight, your team doesn’t play, please give to Caryl Pride Weekend Somethin Naked organizing pride float, they are holding auditions to be in the float. Get in touch with them if you want to participate. Ann got a call from the organizers for volunteers to help, please call Ann if you are interested. All Star Game Mabel/Wessa All Star and Mabel All Star games to be held the same day, 11 am for the Mabel game and 1 pm for the Mabel/Wessa game at the Brockton Oval in Stanley Park, Saturday Aug 2. Please hand in your team member name – 1 all star per team – they will be playing in both games and have that ready for the Monday night scorebook meeting. If you have a backup and both show up, that is great, but expect that only one will play. Wombats are doing the 50/50 and profits are going to the Pride Society. Executive Reports Caryl – nothing other than chocolate money Lisa – nothing Taylor – missed base ump games up to 8 or 9, no more rain out games, but Ratz/Wombats game rescheduled to Mon the 21st at Brit. Jane – all paid for missed ump games Cynthia – made an extra $500 - $600 this year Emah – sold some extra clothing at July 1st game, clothing will be available at the finals and pride games. Miscellaneous AGM not far away, get your teams to come and support and have a say in how the league decisions are made. One suggestion was to have 2 ump clinics and another was to stop the chocolate sales as a fundraising tool, there will be a motion to have a fundraising committee started. New teams can attend but cannot vote. L’il issues to be brought up and direction of league as well. Come and run for the executive and help shape the league! Just be there! Cynthia – In Thunder Bay they have a rubber boot tournament where you wear rubber boots backwards and run the other way, could be fun, call Cynthia to arrange if you are interested. Sunshine Coast tournament in September. Somethin Naked sponsored by X-FM, going to have a game with the X-FM staff, come and cheer on! Wombats – thank you for having the minutes posted on the Website Taylor – Umpire Ass’n looking for plate umps, get carded! It’s fun and you get paid. Team Rep Wrap Up Meeting Monday after finals, be here at 7 pm as a regular team rep meeting

AGM September 8, 2003 Thank you to all who participated and gave their time, money and energy, etc. Ann didn’t realize how much work it takes to run the league. This executive leaves the league financially stable with a new umpiring system in place. Fields Our fields suck but there are so many teams and leagues in Vancouver that we don’t do so bad. Ann went to the NAAGA in Washington, DC and the fields there are really nice but they complained about them as well. Finances We are ahead this year, we have 1 GIC and we cashed one in so we could probably reinvest and get that back. Outstanding balance to be done after final dance and AGM hall rental invoices tallied. We made a profit this year. Cynthia to get a final report in the next two weeks and it will be posted on the web. Umpiring There is a shortage of umpires on behalf of Vancouver Softball Umpires Association. Go get carded! This is a good way to earn some extra money and have fun. Shawn asks if the league couldn’t front the money to help people get carded. Barb thinks we should sponsor totally. Erin disagrees. Shawn moves that the Mabel League front the money for members to take the course to become carded plate umps. Maximum of one player per team. Seconded. Put to vote: 9 in favor, 12 against, 12 abstentions. Motion fails. Tara moves to have the league sponsor 5 women to get carded and ump in our league only on a first come, first serve basis. Barb seconds. Erin against this motion. First come, first serve not fair as how do we get this information out to all the players? And can you choose to ump just for the Mabel League, or can you ump elsewhere? Friendly amendment by Sue – the Mabel League to sponsor 5 women to attend the umpire clinic and to ump for the league only, to be chosen by a lottery, and then they pay the money back. Erin against this motion of paying back as then we get incompetent and crappy umpires. Sue thinks this shows that we are trying to help. Question called: 29 in favor, 5 opposed, 4 abstentions, Motion carries. Base umpiring went well, most games covered except for some exceptions and some rain out games. Teams that missed paid up. Are there some bad umps that we have not invited back? There was an ump that was not invited back but due to shortage of umps this person was needed. Other issues were addressed with each ump. How much money was made from missed games? $300. Question about injury at the field during final tournament. Players who get injured are not to be moved, that is a final decision, and the umpire in question is still being dealt with on that issue. Standings See the standings sheet that was handed out. If you feel that your team has changed drastically, you can appeal in writing. Tatiana – forfeit points in question. Consensus is that it is not fair to get ½ win point for a forfeit. Feels that forfeit unfairly skews standings. Barb motions that all forfeited games to be treated as a win, 2 points to the team that who wins and 0 points to the team who forfeits. Seconded by Tatiana. Score registered as according to Softball BC 7 – 0. Erin feels that we should go by how Softball BC rules, Krema says that the forfeit rule is as follows: A forfeit is a win and the score shall be recorded as 7 – 0. A couple of years ago teams were moving within the standings because of too many forfeits and some were unfairly moved up too high for their playing level. This was an experiment that didn’t really work. Erin feels that we should deal with the team that forfeits and maybe only have 18 teams. Meg feels it is more balanced now with the way the divisions are set up. Question called: 38 in favor, 1 opposed, 5 abstentions. Motion carries. Krema Speaks About the provincials – any team can go to the provincials, you pay your money and you go. The Mabel League is classified as a C & D level league. $370 at the time of registration and should be held here in Vancouver again next year. Softball BC has a minor program with their own representative. Krema is the senior league rep and Len is the junior league rep. Anyone under the age of 23 can be a minor. There are some young players in the Mabel League and Softball BC turns a blind eye to the 18 year olds. If the Mabel League wants to have minors in the league, then there are a lot of things that are needed – Parental permission, Softball BC permission, Field permits, etc. This could potentially be a huge can of worms. Recommend having the Mabel League be a mother type sponsor. Junior ball covered the minor league hence the 23 and under. But minor ball is usually 18 and under. Our constitution states that you have to be 19, there are many complications to us if we change it to 16 and over. Shawn motions that we amend the constitution to read that we allow players 18 and over, CJ seconds. Liability is really for the 16 and 17 year olds as we would need parental consent, cross boundary permits, etc. Softball BC would cover the 18 year olds but not anyone under that age for us. If we get caught drinking on the fields with minors we would be fined and lose our field permits. That would be a major problem. Minors cannot be allowed anywhere near alcohol. The drinking age is 19 in BC, and the dances would also be a problem as we don’t ID at any league functions as the assumption is that everyone is over the age of 19. Could we accommodate younger players at the L’il? We need to separate age and alcohol issues. Sandra feels that we should stay at 19 for the liability issues. Question called: 14 in favor, 27 opposed, 3 abstentions. Motion fails. Maybe we could get a committee together to find any gay/bisexual players between the ages of 16 – 18 and sponsor that team to play in the junior league. Jeannette motions that the league should sponsor a team between the ages of 16 – 18 through a youth organization to play within their own age group in their own league. Ann worries that because we have a surplus in the bank this year that we define sponsorship. Christal thinks we should have a separate committee do this. Sophia feels that we should designate a person or group of people to champion this and not leave it in the hands of the executive as they have too much to do already. Krema estimates that it will cost a minimum of $1200 to sponsor a team, and doesn’t know if they are subsidized or not. Sue doesn’t feel we would have enough women out there to put together a whole team. Claudette feels Youth Co should run something like this. Emah says that Youth Co already covers this but it is mainly young men, the young girls who want to play, do. Jeannette withdraws the motion to have someone find out what it would take, Shawn will champion this. Thank you Krema. Ann to be brought in as a speaker with the experience of a paper she is writing, she is studying this issue of transgender persons playing in team sports. This is a complex issue and deserves more time than we have to devote here. Motion to have Shelly as chair host a pre-season meeting to deal with this issue as it needs to be addressed prior to the commencement of the next year’s season of play. This meeting will be well publicized and legal advice will be sought. Do we have the funds to follow this through? Question called: 30 in favor, Motion carries. Shawn wants to thank all the executive members. Next Saturday is the year end dance at the Wise Hall.
