Playing Rules

Overview

We are a fastpitch softball league with 3 of 4 divisions pitching with a “modified orthodox” style of underhand pitch. Therefore we follow the rules set out by Softball Canada (linked below) and augment them with our own Mabel Playing Rules that have been vetted and approved by the league members.

Umpires for our league are provided a “one-pager” by the UIC before every season, ensuring that Mabel rules are being enforced fairly across all divisions.

How it Works

Softball games must adhere to the following rules:

  1. Softball Canada Rule Book (to access the rules online a $10 subscription is required)
  2. Mabel Playing Rules (updated 2019-07-08)

Setting up the bases

  • 60 feet from the back of home plate to the back of first base.
The orange safety bag should be on the right side of the first baseline (in foul territory).
  • 84 feet 10¼ inches from the back of home plate to the middle of second base.
  • 60 feet from the back of home plate to the back of third base.
The base is fully in fair territory, butting up against the third baseline.
  • First and second should be 60 feet apart, as should second and third base.
  • Orthodox pitching line = 40 feet from the back of home plate
  • Windmill pitching plate = 43 feet from the back of home plate
  • A cone/pylon should be placed to mark the foul line on both the first and third base lines in the outfield to help aid the umpire with foul ball calls.
